Aircraft Radio Operator's Certificate of Proficiency (AROCP)
Accurate and standardised radiotelephone communications are critical to flight safety. An aircraft radio operator's certificate of proficiency (AROCP) allows a person to communicate via radio and other vehicles during normal and emergency situations. All personnel who intend to communicate via an aviation radiotelephone, such as Aerodrome Reporting Officers (ARO), remote piloted or unmanned aerial vehicle operators (UAV or RPAS) and pilots, require a licence.
What you will learn
Upon the completion of this course, you will have the skills to:
- Operate an aviation radio
- Communicate via an aviation radio with pilots, air traffic control and other operational personnel
- Understand and comply with aerodrome light signals
The AROCP course is recommended for
- Anyone who is required to use an aviation radio under CAR 83
- Remotely piloted aerial vehicle (RPAS and UAV) operators
- Anyone interested in working as an Aerodrome Reporting Officer (ARO)
- Airport ground staff and safety officers
- Managers responsible for aerodrome management and safety

The course will cover the following topics:
- Understand the requirements for, and privileges of, an AROCP
- State the functions of components of a radiotelephone system
- Learn how to set up and use an aircraft radio and microphone
- Describe the characteristics of radio waves, wave transmission and reception
- State the responsibilities of a radiotelephone operator
- Demonstrate an understanding of correct phraseology and phonetics
- State standard radio procedures for communication with a ground control agency, communication with a control tower and communication with any other air traffic agency
- State the light signals for aerodrome traffic control
- Explain the information services and methods of reception
- State the emergency radio procedures
- Function and operation of an aviation radio
Note: A written and oral theory examination and a practical test must be completed in accordance with Civil Aviation Regulation 83F and the results notified to CASA. The pass mark for each exam or test is 80%.
Course pre-requisites
The applicant must have a current ICAO Level 4 aviation English language proficiency assessment.
