Given any Australian aerodrome, you will learn to use competently all resources and complete all job functions associated with the role of an Aerodrome Reporting Officer and Works Safety Officer in accordance with the Civil Aviation Safety Regulations (CASR Part 139, MOS 139 and AC139), Australian Skills and Qualifications Standards, and ICAO principles.

Workshop: Aerodrome Reporting Officer Skill Set
The following eight units must be completed to achieve this skill set.
- AVIB0002 Inspect and report on aerodrome serviceability.
- AVIB0003 Inspect and report on aerodrome lighting systems
- AVIB0004 Inspect and report on obstacle limitation surfaces
- AVIC0001 Drive on the airside
- AVIE0005 Complete a Notice to Airmen
- AVIE0003 Operate aeronautical radio
- AVIF0045 Facilitate the safety of aerodrome works and works site access
- AVIZ0003 Maintain basic situational awareness in an aviation workplace
Aerodrome Reporting Officer Skill Set is delivered over one five-day workshop in a face-to-face classroom setting with the forth day taught at an aerodrome.
The course is structured with lectures in the morning, tutorials in the afternoon and evening sessions of self learning. ASSET Aviation Institute offers on-line lectures to assist students complete their home learning and review of each day’s lessons.
The classes commence at 0830 and conclude at 1700, with regular breaks throughout the day. Students are required to complete approximately 2 hours of homework on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday nights. Before the course starts, you are asked to complete 10 hours of reading and preparation, and during the course.

To participate in this Aerodrome Reporting Officer Skill Set AVISS00053 you must have:
- A sufficient level of English language. To demonstrate your English language competency you can provide us evidence of: English language proficiency (Year 10 English or equivalent) or contact us to schedule a language, literacy and numeracy assessment
- An Australian driver’s licence.
- Previous operational experience at an aerodrome, or any other aviation organisation, with pre-existing knowledge and skills in the operations involving aircraft and airside movements, radio operations and reporting.

If you have studied previously or have work experience that is relevant directly to any of the course units, you may be eligible for Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL). These are the pre-requisitve requirements:
- Aerodrome Reporting Officer with 6 months of operational experience
- Government inspector (Aerodromes) with 6 months of operational experience
- Department of Defence Member with with 6 months of operational experience in aerodrome operations

Q: What do I need to bring to the course?
A: You don’t need to bring anything. You will be provided all learning material upon arrival.

A: Our goal is to teach you so you are a competent specialist. If you cannot demonstrate competence, you will be given all reasonable support to ensure that you meet the required standard. Please see our student policies for more information.
Q: What I will learn?
A: The aerodrome reporting officers (AROs) are the gatekeepers to thousands of runways across Australia. How to inspect runways, report on the safety of the aerodrome, mark movement areas and facilitate repairs of these critical aviation facilities is what you will learn.
Q: Is this course for me?
A: You will patrol runways, preserve security and continuously monitor critical operational equipment and infrastructure. Without your protective eye, intuition and action, runway safety may be compromised.
